The Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program provides $25 billion to assist households unable to pay rent and/or utilities due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Funds are provided directly to states, territories, local governments and Native American tribes to administer to eligible households through rental assistance programs. Eligible households may receive up to 12 months of assistance, plus an additional three months if needed dependent on the availability of funds.

Applications for emergency rental assistance may be submitted by either a tenant or a landlord on behalf of that tenant through programs established by grantees. In general, funds will be paid directly to landlords and utility providers. If a landlord does not wish to participate, funds may be paid directly to the tenant.
