FAQ

What is the Emergency Rental Assistance Program?

The Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) provides funds to assist households unable to pay rent and/or utilities due to the ongoing pandemic.

The federal stimulus package passed in December 2020 allocated $25 billion to emergency rental assistance (ERA1). Then the $1.9 trillion stimulus package approved in March 2021 set aside $21.55 billion (ERA2), resulting in a total of more than $46 billion available to tenants that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.

Funds are provided directly to states, territories, local governments and Native American tribes to administer to eligible households through rental assistance programs. Eligible households may receive up to 12 months of assistance, plus an additional three months if needed dependent on the availability of funds.

Applications for emergency rental assistance may be submitted by either a tenant or a landlord on behalf of that tenant through programs established by grantees. In general, funds will be paid directly to landlords and utility providers. If a landlord does not wish to participate, funds may be paid directly to the tenant.

How can Emergency Rental Assistance Program software help?

ERAP software can help states, counties, cities and other grantees streamline the application, approval, distribution and audit process.
